Dysmenorrhea is painful menstruation that are accompanied by either sharp, intermittent pain or dull, aching pain, usually in the pelvis or lower abdomen. Dysmenorrhea may be primary or secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea is from the beginning and usually lifelong. It is characterized by severe and frequent menstrual cramping caused by severe and abnormal uterine contractions. Secondary dysmenorrhea occurs due to some physical cause and usually of later onset. It is caused by some other medical condition present in the body (i.e., pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cervical narrowing, uterine malposition, pelvic tumors etc.).

Useful herbs

Abroma augusta

As a uterine tonic, in neuralgia, dysmenorrhoea and regulates menstrual flow (juice of root bark); diabetes, rheumatic pain and sinusitis (leaf).

Achyranthes bidentata

In the treatment of aching back and knees and pain of the lower limbs (roots); to treat hypertension, back pains, urine in the blood, menstrual pain, bleeding, lowers blood cholesterol levels and so is used in the treatment of atherosclerosis(herb); toothache, indigestion and asthma (root juice); for pyorrhoea (stem)

Alchemilla vulgaris

Helps reduce pains associated with periods as well as ameliorating excessive bleeding, in easing the changes of the menopause, for diarrhea, as a mouthwash for sores and ulcers and as a gargle for laryngitis

Angelica anomala

To regulate menstrual cycle and decreases menstrual pain (root); in the treatment of colds and headaches, coryza, leucorrhoea, boils and abscesses (plant).

Artemisia vulgaris

Used to bring on delayed or suppressed menstrual cycle and helps to regulate menstrual cycles (plant); in the treatment of nervous and spasmodic affections, sterility, functional bleeding of the uterus, dysmenorrhoea, asthma and diseases of the brain (leaves and flowering tops); Used in Homeopathy to treat epilepsy, petit mal, hysteria, sleepwalking, dizziness and prolapsed uterus.

Asarum canadense

Chronic chest complaints, asthma, coughs, colds, dropsy, painful spasms of the bowels and stomach, scanty or painful menstruation, infantile convulsions (root); applied as a poultice to wounds and inflammations, whilst a decoction or salve is applied to sores (fresh leaves)

Atropa acuminata

As a sedative and narcotic (root and leaf); gastrointestinal hypermotility, hyper-secretion, peptic ulcer, spastic constipation, spastic dysmenorrhoea, nocturnal enuresis, bronchial asthma and whooping cough (leaves); sunstroke and painful menstruation (plant); as specific antidote to opium and muscarine poisoning (berries).

Bupleurum chinense

To harmonize the body, balancing the different organs and energies within the body, strengthens the digestive tract, acts as a tonic for the liver and circulatory system, lowers fevers, in the treatment of malaria, blackwater fever, uterine and rectal prolapse, haemorrhoids, sluggish liver, menstrual disorders, abdominal bloating etc (root)

Calamintha nepeta

Used to treat depression, insomnia and painful menstruation.

Chamaelirium luteum

For the female reproductive system and has proved to be a beneficial remedy for menstrual problems, ovarian cysts and also help in the menopause (herb); amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea and leucorrhoea and also for a variety of ailments associated with the male and female reproductive organs (root)

Cinnamomum zeylanicum

For relieving nausea, fever, diarrhea, menstrual problems, to control postpartum hemorrhage, in dysentery

Crocus sativus

To treat chronic haemorrhages in the uterus of adults, to induce menstruation, treat period pains and calm indigestion, colic, in fevers, melancholia and enlargement of the liver. A dental analgesic is obtained from the stigmas.

Dicentra canadensis

In the treatment of chronic cutaneous affections, syphilis, scrofula and some menstrual complaints (tubers).

Dioscorea villosa

As contraceptives and in the treatment of various disorders of the genitary organs as well as in a host of other diseases such as asthma and arthritis (roots); for bilious colic, it is especially helpful in treating the nausea of pregnant women and has been used to ease the pain of childbirth, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, gall bladder complaints, painful menstruation etc (plant)

Dolichos uniflorus

Measles, smallpox, burns, sores and tumors (plant); menstrual problems (plant decoction); kidney stones (seed). Ayurveda uses decoction of seed in leucorrhoea, menstrual troubles, bleeding during pregnancy, colic caused by wind, piles, rheumatism, heamorrhagic disease and for intestinal worms. Soup prepared from seeds is beneficial in enlarged liver and spleen. Tribal practices use the parts of the plant for dysuria, sores, tumours, burns, adenitis, fistula ani, intercostal neuralgia, pleurisy, piles, hiccups, abdominal lump, bronchial asthma,pneumonia, prolapsus ani, menstrual complaints, piles, colic, epistaxis, flatulence, ophthalmia, ulcers,urinary troubles and kidney stone.

Dracaena reflexa

To cure malarial symptoms, poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, dysmenorrhea.

Euphorbia resinifera

For bronchosis, cancer, catarrh, conjunctivosis, constipation, dermatosis, diarrhea, dropsy, dysmenorrhea, epistaxis, gout, headache, otosis, plantar wart, respirosis, sore, ulcer.

Hedeoma pulegioides

In the treatment of digestive disorders, colds, whooping cough, painful menstruation and as an aid in childbirth, for sprains, rheumatism, allergy, burn, conjunctivosis, cramps, dysentery, fever, gout, headache, hepatosis, leukorrhea, pertussis, pharyngosis, pneumonia.

Jasminum angustifolium

Ringworm and stimulates the gastrointestinal tract (when taken as a tonic) (root); coughs and lung complaints (syrup); to help menstrual pain and lung problems (oil). The oil of the leaf is rubbed on the head to heal the eyes.

Majorana hortensis

In colic (seed and leaf); bronchial complaints, tension headaches, insomnia, anxiety, minor digestive upsets, painful menstruation, in asthma, hysteria and paralysis (plant); an external application for sprains, bruises, stiff and paralytic limbs and toothache, and for hot fomentation in acute diarrhoea (oil)

Phyla nodiflora

For boils, reducing fever and as a diuretic. It is used in the treatment of hookworm. The plant is cooling, diuretic, emmenagogue and used in the form of a paste as maturant for boils, swollen cervical glands, erysipelas and chronic indolent ulcers. It is used in lack of bowel movements and pain in knee joints. Infusion of leaves and tender stalks is useful in indigestion in children and also after delivery in women.

Pimenta dioica

To treat arthrosis, athlete’s foot, bruise, candidiasis, cold, colic, corns, cramps, diabetes, diarrhea, dysmenorrhea, dyspepsia, fatigue, fever, gastric disorders, gingivosis, high blood pressure, mycosis, neuralgia, rheumatism, toothache, vaginosis.

Polygonum hydropiper

In treating diarrhoea, dyspepsia, itching skin, excessive menstrual bleeding, menstrual pains and haemorrhoids and as a sedative (plant); as a tonic (root).

Potentilla anserina

In chronic diarrhea, alleviating spasms, to stop excessive and painful flow of menses, for intestinal troubles, leucorrhoea, kidney stones, arthritis and cramps(plant); for inflamed gums.

Rosa indica

For sprains, ulcers and wounds (fruit); in dysmenorrhoea, poor circulation, stomach pains and swellings (flower buds); used in the treatment of arthritis, boils, coughs etc (decoction of leaves, fruits and roots).

Scoparia dulcis

For diarrhea, for menstrual problems (pain, cramps, premenstrual syndrome [PMS], and to promote and normalize menstruation), vomiting, kidney problems and to increase the secretion of gastric juices (plant); in fever, cough and bronchitis and as a gargle for toothache (leaf); to relieve symptoms of glycosuria, reduce hyperglycaemia, increase RBC count, in anaemia, albuminuria, ketonuria, retinitis and other complications associated with diabetes mellitus.

Tanacetum vulgare

Rheumatism, ulcers (chronic), for gout, as an abortifacient and vermifuge (essential flower and leaf oil); maladies of the liver, gall bladder and the bile duct, in treating strangury, kidney weaknesses, in dyspepsia, with troublesome flatulence, hysteria, jaundice, fevers (plant); to treat amenorrhoea and painful dysmenorrhoea and as an anthelmintic, especially for children (leaf infusion and whole plant);in diphtheria, acute inflammations of the throat, and in epidemic catarrh (spray or inhalation of plant decoction).

Trillium erectum

To aid childbirth, as a treatment for irregular menstrual periods, period pains and excessive vaginal discharge, ulcers (especially varicose), skin complaints, gangrene, insect bites and stings, as a wash for sore nipples.

Valeriana jatamansi

Substitute for Valeriana dubia, also in eye, spleen and blood diseases, in fever (as a stimulant) and as an expectorant (root), anxiety and emotional disorders such as hysteria, painful menstruation and cramps, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome etc. It encourages sleep, improve sleep quality and reduce blood pressure. Externally, it is used to treat eczema, ulcers and minor injuries.

Viburnum prunifolium

To treat gynecological conditions, including menstrual cramps, to prevent miscarriages, aiding recovery after childbirth, in treating the effects of menopause, dysentery, haemorrhage of the uterus, prolapse of the uterus, morning sickness, convulsive disorders, colic and other cramping pains that affect the bile ducts, hysteria, asthma and palpitations of a nervous origin (decoction)

Vitex negundo

As a demulcent (in the sinuses) and on sores (related to scrofula) (oil); in gonorrhea, rheumatism, sprains, fever (related to catarrh) and headache (leaf); aids in the removal of worms and foetid discharges from ulcers (leaf juice), controls acne in teenagers, regulates ovulatory cycle, menopause, menorrhagia (heavy menstruation), menstrual difficulties (secondary amenorrhea), premenstrual syndrome, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea and endometriosis and fibrocystic breast disease among women, relieves pains due to rheumatism, gout, sciatica and the body ache resulted from heavy physical exertion, skin troubles, migraine; with the right proportion it is use for dental care for healthy, disease free teeth, as mouth wash and treatment for toothache. Pillows stuffed with leaves are slept on to remove catarrh and headache. Dried fruit is used to destroy human worm while seeds boiled in water and eaten, or the water is taken internally, to prevent spread of toxins from poisonous bites of animals, also cooling for skin disorders.
