Amenorrhea is absence of menstrual bleeding. It may be primary or secondary. Primary amenorrhea is defined as the failure of menses to occur by age 16 years. Secondary amenorrhea is defined as the cessation of menses once they have begun. Amenorrhea is normal only before puberty, during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and after menopause.

Amenorrhea can result from a variety of conditions such as anovulation (absence of ovulation), polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothyroidism, pituitary tumors, turner syndrome, cushing’s disease, excessive levels of the hormone androgen, obesity, anorexia nervosa, anemia etc. Excessive physical activity, stress and anxiety can also cause amenorrhea.

Useful herbs

Aloe vera

As a tonic, in amenorrhea, asthma, boils, bruises, burns (including those from radiation), stomach cancer, common cold, cough, digestive disorders, fever, hemorrhages, hysteria, inflammation, eye problems, jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, colitis, wound, scald, dry skin, conjunctivitis, psoriasis, hair fall, rosacea, warts and eczema; prevents opportunistic infections in cases of HIV and AIDS.

Angelica pubescens

To promote menstruation, to treat arthritis, rheumatism, headache, toothache and abscesses.

Anthemis cotula

To induce menstruation and was traditionally used to treat supposedly hysterical conditions related to the uterus, as a poultice on piles or to draw splinters out of the body, and can also be applied to the bath water (herb); rheumatism, epilepsy, asthma, colds and fevers (infusion); onto insect stings (leaves)

Anthemis tinctoria

As a poultice on piles and can also be applied to the bath water and onto insect stings (leaves); in earaches and deafness (seed oil); stimulates menstrual flow (plant).

Antidesma ghaesembilla

Used as a drink to treat diarrhea, to promote menses, to recover from childbirth, and to invigorate (decoction of the bark); applied externally to relieve headache, skin diseases and abdominal swelling, to promote healing of wounds and as a water bath to reduce fever (leaves).

Aristolochia clematitis

Stimulates the uterus, induces menstruation, controls bacterial infections and promotes healing, in the treatment of slow-healing cuts, eczema, infected toe and finger nails (herb); to induce childbirth (stem juice); as a bath in rectal and colon cancer (decoction of leaves and stems).

Artemisia abrotanum

Improves digestion and liver function by increasing secretions in the stomach and intestines, it stimulates the uterus and encourages menstrual flow, lowers fevers, relaxes spasms and destroys intestinal worms (plant)

Artemisia vulgaris

Used to bring on delayed or suppressed menstrual cycle and helps to regulate menstrual cycles (plant); in the treatment of nervous and spasmodic affections, sterility, functional bleeding of the uterus, dysmenorrhoea, asthma and diseases of the brain (leaves and flowering tops); Used in Homeopathy to treat epilepsy, petit mal, hysteria, sleepwalking, dizziness and prolapsed uterus.

Asarum canadense

Chronic chest complaints, asthma, coughs, colds, dropsy, painful spasms of the bowels and stomach, scanty or painful menstruation, infantile convulsions (root); applied as a poultice to wounds and inflammations, whilst a decoction or salve is applied to sores (fresh leaves)

Ballota nigra

For treating problems connected with the respiratory system, convulsions, low spirits and the menopause, in the treatment of nervous dyspepsia, travelling sickness, morning sickness in pregnancy, arthritis, gout, scanty menstrual flow and bronchitis.

Bauhinia purpurea

Used to treat gastric ulcer, swellings, leprosy, cough, menstrual disorders, glandular diseases and prolapse of the rectum, haemorrhagic diseases, leucorrhoea and coughs.

Bupleurum chinense

To harmonize the body, balancing the different organs and energies within the body, strengthens the digestive tract, acts as a tonic for the liver and circulatory system, lowers fevers, in the treatment of malaria, blackwater fever, uterine and rectal prolapse, haemorrhoids, sluggish liver, menstrual disorders, abdominal bloating etc (root)

Campsis grandiflora

In the treatment of women's complaints (flowers and whole plant); to correct menstrual disorders, rheumatoid pains, traumatic injuries, difficult urination, pruritis and oozing dermaphytoses (flower)

Celastrus scandens

For chronic liver and skin ailments (including skin cancer), rheumatism, leucorrhoea, dysentery and suppressed menses; to treat obstinate sores, skin eruptions etc (root); as an ointment on burns, scrapes and skin eruptions (bark)

Chamaelirium luteum

For the female reproductive system and has proved to be a beneficial remedy for menstrual problems, ovarian cysts and also help in the menopause (herb); amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea and leucorrhoea and also for a variety of ailments associated with the male and female reproductive organs (root)

Crataegus pinnatifida

To lower blood cholesterol levels and to improve blood circulation, for abdominal distension, pain, diarrhoea and to induce menstruation (fruit); in the treatment of difficult labour, hernia and swollen genitals (seed); as an antidote to varnish poisoning (leaves and twigs); in the treatment of nausea and vomiting (root)

Cyperus esculentus

Promote urine production and menstruation (plant); in the treatment of flatulence, indigestion, colic, diarrhoea, dysentery, debility and excessive thirst (tubers)

Dictamnus albus

In nervous complaints and intermittent fevers, in scrofulous and scorbutic diseases (root); it strongly stimulates the muscles of the uterus, inducing menstruation and sometimes causing abortion (plant); for female complaints and constipation (leaves).

Laurus nobilis

In the treatment of hysteria, amenorrhoea, flatulent colic etc (fruits, leaves); to treat upper respiratory tract disorders and to ease arthritic aches and pains (leaves); to treat sprains, bruises etc (oil from fruit); used to treat anorexia, cancer, candida, colic, dandruff, earache, high Blood Pressure, hysteria, nervousness, rheumatism, uterosis.

Salacia chinensis

In venereal diseases and diabetes (root); in amenorrhoea (root decoction); lowers blood pressure (stem extract).

Solanum dulcamara

In the treatment of skin diseases, warts, tumours, felons, arthritis, rheumatism, bronchial congestion, heart ailments, ulcerative colitis, jaundice, skin eruptions, ulcers and cellulite, syphilitic diseases, cachectic affections, scrofula, indurations from milk, leucorrhoea, jaundice, and obstructed menstruation (herb); to cancerous sores and other swellings (fruit); for cancer and swellings (root)

Toona sinensis

Used to treat red spots on skin and as a remedy for gynecological troubles, including irregular menses (bark); to treat diarrhoea, chronic dysentery, flatulence, bloody stools, seminal emissions, leucorrhoea, metrorrhagia and gonorrhoea (decoction of bark); used to cool and to promote urination (powdered roots); chewed to stimulate digestion (young leaves).

Trillium erectum

To aid childbirth, as a treatment for irregular menstrual periods, period pains and excessive vaginal discharge, ulcers (especially varicose), skin complaints, gangrene, insect bites and stings, as a wash for sore nipples.

Vaccaria pyramidata

Maladies of the skin and as a tonic (sap); to treat skin problems, breast tumours, in suppressed menstruation, deficiency of lactation and sluggish labour (decoction); to cure itch (plant)
