Health Remedies - Oligomenorrhea
Oligomenorrhea is the term for infrequent or very light menstruation. It is described as menstrual periods that occur at intervals of greater than 35 days, with only four to nine menstrual periods in a year. Oligomenorrhea increases the risk of infertility, osteoporosis and some cardiovascular diseases.
Oligomenorrhea is most commonly associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS have slightly higher levels of male hormones, called androgens, which causes oligomenorrhea. The other causes include hormonal changes, emotional and physical stress, chronic illnesses, tumors that secrete estrogen, poor nutrition, excessive exercise, eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa etc.
In the treatment of stomach pains, coughs, colds, menstrual irregularities, post partum pains, to increase milk flow and as a purgative after childbirth (root)
To calm coughs, to promote perspiration and menstruation, and to treat urinary disorders, colds, rheumatism, heartburn, gallstones, alopecia (hair loss), and sour stomach (plant); applied to the forehead to relieve headaches and to the chest to relieve chest pains (frond paste)
For cancer and tumors, coagulating blood, in edemas, third degree burns and promoting the absorption of drugs, to expel intestinal worms, as emmenagogue, as a drastic treatment for venereal diseases, as a gargle in cases of sore throat and as an antidote for seasickness.
In disorders of the mucous membrane, of the respiratory and of the digestive passages, for catarrhal affection of the eyes, as well as for catarrhal diarrhoea, in the relief of headaches and neuralgia, and as a remedy for nerve exhaustion in women, relieves the frontal headache from nasal catarrh, nervous headache, particularly when due to gastric disturbances, with greasy taste, menstrual headache, with chilliness and suppressed menses, bilious and gastric headaches, of a dull and heavy character, with greasy taste and nausea, and headaches due to uterine irregularities or to a rheumatic diathesis

As an expectorant, laxative and aphrodisiac (seed); discharges from the uterus (flower); stimulating or restoring normal menstrual function (root bark); sporadic fever and dysentery (seed decoction); applied to various skin lesions and for joints inflamed. It not only increases the contractions of the uterus in labour, but also is useful in the treatment of metrorrhagia, specially when dependent on fibroids; useful also as an ecbolic; of value in sexual lassitude. Seed oil and root bark may cause male sterility.
For eye sores, as an antiseptic and stimulating the secretion of gastric juices; promotes digestion; also promotes menses and suppressed lochia (leaves); to relieve sore legs (poultice); applied to relieve earache (oil).
Fruit is emetic, decoction is used in biliousness and asthma. Leaves are applied on the head in giddiness and headache. Their decoction is reportedly used to treat asthma and biliousness. A decoction of the leaves or roots is said to be an emmenagogue and useful for treating hysteria.
On forehead in headache, to treat gout and rheumatism (leaves); menstrual disorders, in diarrhoea and dysentery (flowers); coughs, diarrhoea and dysentery (bark juice). Flowers are crushed and snuffed to stop nasal bleeding.
As one of the best laxatives (seed oil); poultice for boils, rheumatism and sores (seed paste); skin diseases, such as ringworm, and itching, as an emmenagogue (leaf decoction);in temporary constipation and wherever a mild action is essential, and is extremely useful for children and the aged, for various cutaneous complaints, such as ringworm, itch, dropped into the eye to remove the after-irritation caused by the removal of foreign bodies (oil); used by nursing mothers as an external application, to increase the flow of milk, as a poultice to relieve headaches and treat boils and diabetes (leaves).
For colic, as an analgesic, in hysteria, giddiness, nervous headaches, palpitations and rheumatism (leaf); alleviating gall bladder stones, gallbladder pain and spasms, in amenorrhea and menopause (for hot flashes) (plant); as an emmenagogue, anthelmintic and in epilepsy (volatile oil); coughs, flatulence (flower infusion); alleviating pain.
In upper respiratory tract inflammations, digestive disorders, as a tonic, in reducing fever, nausea, alleviating spasms, and in skin diseases and irregular menstruation; for the treatment of thrush and gingivitis (oil); as a gargle in the treatment of sore-throats (leaves)
For urinary discharges (seeds); in indigestion, dysppepsia, dysentery, piles and sores, irregular menstruation and in internal hemorrhaging (“where ergot is indicated”) (bark); for syphilis and hemorrhagic dysentery (dried flowers).
Ear maladies (leaf); used in menstrual suppression and flatulent colic, and is a stimulating tonic after fevers, to treat nausea, diarrhoea, bronchial congestion, sore throat.
For diarrhea, for menstrual problems (pain, cramps, premenstrual syndrome [PMS], and to promote and normalize menstruation), vomiting, kidney problems and to increase the secretion of gastric juices (plant); in fever, cough and bronchitis and as a gargle for toothache (leaf); to relieve symptoms of glycosuria, reduce hyperglycaemia, increase RBC count, in anaemia, albuminuria, ketonuria, retinitis and other complications associated with diabetes mellitus.
Used in piles and a decoction of them is used as emmenagogue, on ulcers, in dysentery, infantile cholera and diarrhoea, in urinary complaints in combination with other medicines, acute cystitis, strangury, early rheumatism, used internally in catarrhal affections of kidney and urinary bladder and externally, are applied on ophthalmic and skin problems (fresh leaves); helps to prevent gall and kidney stones (seeds).
For arresting bleeding and as a demulcent (seed); as a diaphoretic and gentle laxative (leaf); liver problems such as hepatitis, jaundice and cirrhosis and due to eating fungi containing phalloidine or amantine; in gallstones, for intermittent fevers, dropsy and as emmenagogue (whole plant).
In suppressed urine & menstruation, catarrh, and whooping-coughs (plant);in asthma, cold and to expel round worm (dried leaves); to cure gum and toothache (young flower) .
Used to treat red spots on skin and as a remedy for gynecological troubles, including irregular menses (bark); to treat diarrhoea, chronic dysentery, flatulence, bloody stools, seminal emissions, leucorrhoea, metrorrhagia and gonorrhoea (decoction of bark); used to cool and to promote urination (powdered roots); chewed to stimulate digestion (young leaves).
To aid childbirth, as a treatment for irregular menstrual periods, period pains and excessive vaginal discharge, ulcers (especially varicose), skin complaints, gangrene, insect bites and stings, as a wash for sore nipples.
Maladies of the skin and as a tonic (sap); to treat skin problems, breast tumours, in suppressed menstruation, deficiency of lactation and sluggish labour (decoction); to cure itch (plant)
