Health Remedies - Diphtheria

Product Categories

Diphtheria is a serious contagious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Diphtheria spreads through respiratory droplets (such as those produced by a cough or sneeze) of an infected person or someone who carries the bacteria but has no symptoms. Diphtheria can also be spread by contaminated objects or foods (such as contaminated milk). Symptoms usually occur 2 to 5 days after exposure to the bacteria.

Diphtheria usually affects the mucous membranes of nose and throat. Occasionally it can affect other mucous membranes or skin. Diphtheria typically causes a bad sore throat, fever, swollen glands and weakness. An important sign is a thick, gray covering in the back of the throat that can make breathing difficult. The most serious complications are caused by a toxin produced by the diphtheria bacterium that can damage the heart, nervous system and, less often, the kidneys.
