Gastritis is the inflammation, infection or irritation of the lining of the stomach. It may be acute or chronic in onset. The most common symptoms are abdominal upset or pain. Other symptoms are belching, abdominal bloating, nausea, and vomiting or a feeling of fullness or of burning in the upper abdomen.

The main cause of gastritis is infection from a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Gastritis may also be associated with other medical conditions, including HIV/AIDS, Crohn's disease, bile reflux disease, parasitic infections, some connective tissue disorders, and liver or kidney failure. Stress, excessive alcohol and regular use of medications such as painkillers may trigger the disease.

Useful herbs

Aeschynomene indica	Spermicidal, contains an unidentified alkaloid. Used as charcoal for gun powder and medicinal applications; used to treat gastritis and fever in Chinese traditional medicine.
Agrostemma githago	In the treatment of cancer, warts, paralysis and gastritis (seeds); dropsy and jaundice (plant)
Alocasia indica	Useful in inflammation and diseases of the abdomen and spleen (rootstock); to stings of giant nettle. The juice of the petiole is dropped into the ears of children for otorrhoea. For stomach ache (rhizome).
Dioscorea villosa	As contraceptives and in the treatment of various disorders of the genitary organs as well as in a host of other diseases such as asthma and arthritis (roots); for bilious colic, it is especially helpful in treating the nausea of pregnant women and has been used to ease the pain of childbirth, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, gall bladder complaints, painful menstruation etc (plant)
Pinellia ternata	Strengthens the spleen, very effective in controlling nausea and vomiting, for coughs with thin watery phlegm and gastritis (root); To treat cancer, depression, dermatosis, diarrhea, dyspepsia, gonorrhea, headache, hiccup, insomnia, jaundice , leukemia, leukorrhea, nausea, nephrosis, pharyngosis, psoriasis, rheumatism, snakebite.
Veratrum viride	Cures puerperal fever, phthisis pulmonalis, acute rheumatism, gastric irritation, colic, tetanus, acute gonorrhea, active cerebral engorgement, exophthalmic goiter with tachycardia, aneurism, acute cases of pneumonia, peritonitis, threatened apoplexy, chronic coughs, constipation, for bruises, sprains, fractures, to treat aches and pains
